Down Underquilt for Hammock Underquilt Glow -2 | Bushmen
The Down Underquilt is the Bushmen Ultralight Underquilt Glow -2 °C. It weighs approximately 550 g, with 300 g of fill weight. The filling consists of recycled Polish down. The length of the underquilt is 2 m, with a width of 100 cm at the foot end and a generous 140 cm at the shoulder area. The Glow is specifically designed to keep the upper body warm, which is why it is extra wide at one end. The underquilt accommodates users up to 190 cm tall (5 cm of the end extends beyond the underquilt), but many may prefer a significantly longer underquilt than their sleeping length.
The model name Glow -2 °C refers to the comfort temperature of the underquilt; survival in cold conditions can be very individual and influenced by many factors.
Versatile Underquilt
The underquilt is designed for use as a top quilt, blanket, or additional insulation wherever you sleep.
Packing Size
When packed in its own stuff sack, the Underquilt Glow -2 °C takes up only 3.5 liters. The stuff sack features a handle at the bottom for easy retrieval. The opening has a drawstring closure secured with a buckle.
Three-season Underquilt
The Underquilt Glow -2 °C is a three-season underquilt (spring-summer-autumn) that allows free movement in your hammock. Glow provides better protection around the shoulders and sides than traditional near-rectangular underquilts.
Recycled Down Filling
The Underquilt Glow -2 °C is filled with 100% recycled, ethically sourced Polish down with a fill power of 750. Polish down is globally renowned for its exceptional quality. The quality of down is measured by its Fill Power rating, which is crucial when discussing down quality and therefore insulation properties. Down is one of the warmest insulating filling materials used in sleeping bags, jackets, and underquilts.
What Makes Bushmen's Underquilt Unique?
The Glow -2 °C underquilt is filled with recycled Polish 750 Cuin goose down. The design and tightening system of the underquilt are also unique.
Where Does the Recycled Down Come From?
The down comes from products that have reached the end of their life, such as luxury hotel down comforters. Before being reused, the down is thoroughly cleaned and washed with biodegradable detergents. After washing, the down is sorted by quality. After this cleaning and sorting process, the down is ready for reuse. Reusing down reduces environmental impact and significantly lessens the product's ecological footprint.
Structure of the Underquilt
The shape and chamber design of the underquilt result from precise planning, giving each cluster of down a designated space. The H-chamber design improves insulation performance, minimizing through-sewn seams that can create cold spots between the sleeper and the chilly outside air.
Why is the Underquilt So Wide at the Top?
The Glow has a width of 140 cm at the upper body to protect the chest, arms, and head. The down chambers near the chest and shoulders are smaller squares, ensuring the down stays precisely where it's needed. When you roll over in the hammock, you won’t need to check whether the underquilt is positioned correctly.
Narrower Foot End
At the foot end, the down chambers are oriented lengthwise, allowing them to mold well to the shape of the hammock's foot end. The lengthwise-sewn channels create an oval shape when attached under the hammock, forming a thicker insulation layer.
Ingenious Tightening System
The precisely designed tightening system allows the underquilt to fit almost all hammocks. It can be more challenging to use on models with long side cords (American models).
Fabrics of the Underquilt
The Down Underquilt fabrics are made from durable, breathable ultralight rip-stop nylon (22g/m2) and have a durable water repellent (DWR) finish. The fabric is so dense that the down cannot escape from within the underquilt.
Colors of the Underquilt – Subdued Green and Bright Orange
The underquilt is two-toned; one side is dark green, blending into forest hues, while the other side is bright orange for visibility when needed. Sometimes it's essential for your campsite to be seen from a distance, or simply if you prefer a brighter color scheme.
Attachment and Adjustment
The underquilt includes two 1.25 m long elastic cords with tightening buckles. These self-locking buckles are well-proven in Bushmen's ultralight tarps. With the elastic cords and tightening buckles, the underquilt can be easily attached and adjusted under your hammock. The underquilt's tension can easily be adjusted using the tightening buckles from inside the hammock.
Comfort and Limit Temperatures
The comfort temperature of the underquilt is calculated on the assumption that the simultaneous sleeping bag or top quilt also has a comfort temperature of -2 °C or higher.
When using the Glow underquilt as a top quilt, its comfort temperature is +5 °C, and the limit temperature is -2 °C.
Instructions for Using the Underquilt – Read Carefully Before Use
The Glow Underquilt is an ultralight product, with fabrics made from ultralight materials and featuring high-quality 750 fill power down. The Glow Underquilt can also be used as a top quilt, blanket, or additional insulation wherever you sleep. Read the detailed instructions below for various use options.
Using as an Underquilt in a Hammock:
Attach your hammock.
Remove the underquilt from its stuff sack, fluff, and shake it to allow the down to expand.
Place the underquilt inside your hammock, ensuring it is correctly oriented for your sleeping position. The narrower end goes at the foot, and the wider end at the head.
Attach the black tightening buckles at the ends of the elastic cords to the loops on the corners of the underquilt (green-orange cord loop next to a small orange buckle). Connect the elastic cord from corner to corner along the short sides of the underquilt.
Attach the elastic cords to the carabiners holding your hammock to the tree straps, whoopie slings, or other attachment points.
Tighten the black buckles so that the elastic cords pull snugly but not overly tight.
Now shift the underquilt under your hammock. There should be about 10 cm of space between the underquilt and the hammock bottom. If not, tighten the elastic cords slightly using the black buckles.
Along the sides of the underquilt, there are drawstrings running through the cord channel, whose tension can be adjusted at the ends of the underquilt using the orange tightening buckles. Use these drawstrings to shape the ends of the underquilt around your hammock. Normally, it's sufficient to tighten the cords to about half their total length.
Climb into your hammock and adjust the tension on the underquilt from both buckles so that it gently envelops the hammock. To adjust the foot end, you will need to get out of the hammock.
Tightening – pull from the end of the black elastic cord to tighten; when released, the buckle will hold in the position you tightened it to.
Loosening – slightly lift the buckle to allow movement, loosening the cord. Upon release, the buckle will hold in the position where you loosened it.
Adjust the shape of the ends of the underquilt with the orange buckles to ensure they gently wrap around the hammock.
The underquilt is installed, and it's time to relax.
