Romanian M73 steel helmet, surplus. This steel helmet from the Romanian army has been in service since 1973, gradually replacing the M38 and M38/42 models used during World War II and the Soviet M40 helmets that followed. Its egg-shaped design was likely inspired by the discontinued M38 model, a descendant of the Dutch M34 helmet. The M73 model is made from high-quality steel with 'good ballistic protection characteristics.' The protection is enhanced by a unique egg-like shape. The interior is lined with leather and has added padding made from horsehair or felt. The chin strap features four attachment points and is double-layered at the chin. There’s a leather flap at the back for adjusting the fit. The manufacturing year and serial number may be located under the leather liner or the rear rim of the helmet.
