Soviet GP-5 Gas Mask, Surplus. The GP-5 ("Civilian Gas Mask") was produced by the Soviet Union from 1962 to 1990 for civil defense storage and use. The gas mask is based on the ShM-41, which itself was originally the ShM-62, replaced by the ShM-62u. Updated versions of the ShM-62 are the ShM-66mu and PMK-G. The GP-5 was designed to protect Soviet civilians from radioactive fallout during the Cold War. This "mask" is a "helmet"-type mask made of white rubber. The mask's lenses are held in place by pressed metal frames that are compressed into the mask's rubber. The mask features a metal hose connector with a 40 mm filter inlet, as well as inhalation and exhalation valve assemblies. Air enters through the inhalation valve and flows into the mask through Tissot tubes under the lenses and is exhaled through the exhalation valve. The lenses tend to fog easily, and anti-fog inserts were originally included with this series.
No filters come with this mask (filters contained asbestos).
