Using the tourniquet allows for easier one-handed tightening of extremities with significant open wounds. The patient should immediately be placed on the ground, either lying down or sitting. The tourniquet is applied as high as possible on the limb, pulled tight, and the Velcro secured. If three fingers fit between the tourniquet and the skin, it is too loose and should be tightened. The tourniquet is not meant for long-term use as it will restrict blood circulation throughout the limb, which can cause necrosis.
